Cauliflower Ear: What It Is, Causes & Treatment

Cauliflower ear, also known as auricular hematoma, is a condition that affects the external part of the ear. It occurs due to trauma or injury to the ear, resulting in blood accumulation between the cartilage and the perichondrium (the connective tissue covering the cartilage). The name “cauliflower ear” comes from the deformed appearance of the ear, resembling a cauliflower.

Causes

  1. Trauma: The most common cause of cauliflower ear is trauma, often seen in contact sports like wrestling, boxing, and rugby. Repeated blows or friction to the ear can lead to blood accumulation.
  2. Ear Piercing Complications: Poorly performed ear piercings can damage the ear’s blood vessels, causing hematoma formation.
  3. Wrestler’s Ear: Wrestlers and martial artists are particularly susceptible due to frequent ear trauma during training and competitions.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and redness of the ear
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Deformed appearance (due to blood accumulation)
  • Reduced hearing (if the ear canal is affected)

Treatment

  1. Immediate Care:
  2. Apply ice to reduce swelling.
  3. Avoid putting pressure on the affected ear.
  4. Seek medical attention promptly.
  5. Draining the Hematoma:
  6. A doctor can drain the accumulated blood using a syringe or incision.
  7. Compression dressings may be applied afterward.
  8. Preventing Recurrence:
  9. Wearing protective headgear during sports.
  10. Properly managing ear injuries.

Remember, early intervention is crucial to prevent permanent deformity. If you suspect cauliflower ear, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
